Killarney National Park

07.04.2024

Fancy a weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city to a lush, cathartic mountainous, lake-filled landscape? Then do not dither, head to Killarney National Park! With its extensive mountain range, several lakes, waterfalls and woodland it offers plenty of trips to choose from. Killarney – a town of the same name – is surrounded by the park from the southwest side. It is in County Kerry in southwest Ireland. Ireland's highest mountain range called the McGillycuddy's Reeks stretches in the park, along with the world-famous lakes nestled at its foot.

Certain parts of Killarney National Park have gone undisturbed for several hundred years, allowing a variety of flora and fauna to thrive. Thanks to the weather conditions, including frequent rainfalls, the nature stays refreshed and lush throughout the year and diverse natural processes take place - the evolvement of microorganisms, such as some types of fungi, for example.

An Indigenous red deer herd reside in the park. The red deer in Killarney National Park are the last surviving indigenous herd of red deer in Ireland. The Killarney herd has been in the park since Neolithic times! All the other red deer herds in the country are descended from re-introduced stock.

Reenadinna Yew Woodland is the largest area of yew woodland in Western Europe and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation. Trees within it are estimated to be between 200 and 250 years old.

The National Park has been designated a biosphere reserve because of the presence of such rare flora and fauna.

Well, I reckon Killarney displays a miscellaneous range of options to its visitors. It is of vital importance of its caretakers to preserve the beauties of its almost intact wildlife. So, in case you are visiting the park, do not let your respectfulness and consideration for the environment stray from the beaten path. Remember that nature did not ask for your interference against its natural, innate laws, principles, and intact authenticity.
