Fungi: Cordyceps, a zombie fungus

I am sure you´ ve heard about the famous show based on an even more famous videogame called The Last of us. But did you know the fungus which turns humans into deadly fungal zombies really exists? 

It is a fungus of the family called cordyceps. This extraordinary group of parasitic fungi, often called the zombie fungi, have developed an unnerving ability to control the minds and bodies of their hosts. These real-life "zombie fungi" are as fascinating as they are terrifying, offering a haunting glimpse into the intricate complexities of nature's most specific adaptations. 

The Lifecycle of Cordyceps Zombie Fungi:

Cordyceps, a genus of fungi found in diverse ecosystems worldwide, showcases a variety of species, each with its own peculiarities. The life cycle of cordyceps fungi often involves a progression, starting with the spores of the fungi infiltrating the bodies of unsuspecting insects or other arthropods.

When a cordyceps spore lands on a potential host, it infiltrates the body and initiates a parasitic relationship. Once inside, the fungus begins to take control, manipulating the host's behavior to serve its own needs. It exerts control over the host's central nervous system, effectively turning the insect into a "zombie."

Macabre Puppeteering:

As the infection progresses, the host's behavior becomes increasingly bizarre. The cordyceps fungi drive the host to move to an optimal location for the fungi's reproductive success. In some cases, infected insects are compelled to climb to higher elevations or position themselves in exposed areas.
