Larry Nassar: The Abuser In Disquise

The case of Larry Nassar is very terrifying and interesting at the same time. With people like this you are usually amazed by two facts. Number one: how could anyone who has at least a little part of humanity in themselves do anything similar? and number to: How powerful and in the end even competent the person has to be to get away with such a brutal behaviour for such a long time.

Larry Nassar was a doctor, a physician who was considered one of the best in the world of gymnastics. He was very helpful to many athletes, even olympionists. Their parents were traveling to him from all around the US to help them with injuries or health problems. He was truly a legend in his field. Considering these facts, it was even a bigger shock not just for the world of gymnastics when the young female athletes began to report that he was also an abuser, sexual predator, rapist.

Even though just these facts are truly terrible, the main problem with this case was that the gymnastic Union was defending Nassar for a long time. ¨He was so important to them that they did not want to believe the first athletes who accused him of such behaviour in the 1990s and his abuse went on for another 25 years. However, this is not a problem just in the case of Larry Nassar. Rape or any sexual harassment usually hapeen in private space and mostly there is no wittness. Therefore, this case is very important because it pointed out the difficult process of convicting someone like that.

Larry Nassar sexually abused over 500 girls and women. 500 is the number known today therefore, it does not have to be final. However this case also shows that Justice still exists in the world because many of these harassed athletes united in the end, stood up against Larry Nassar and he was convicted. One of the courts against Nassar lasted for a whole week where many of Larry Nassar's victims including olympionists such as Aly Raisman spoke, read their statements in front of him. Larry Nassar had to take responsibility for his acts and he was sentenced for life in prison and the USA gymnastics was also convicted for covering up Nassar's crimes.

Larry Nassar is not really an important figure. When talking about moral impact, he is not even good enough to be an average, however his case is important and had a different impact on his surroundings and even the world. And that is why the world should talk about him.

He should be the deterrent case for us to be aware of similar mistakes that could be made in the future. And the world should talk about his victims as heroines, because they were and are brave for radically standing up against a powerful figure like Larry Nassar and saying "This is wrong".
