SLANE CASTLE

22.03.2024

Also known as Cáisleán Bhaile Shláine in Irish. It is a splendid castle located in the eponymously named village of Slane in County Meath, north of Dublin. Along with Blarney castle – which I might write about sometime in the future – Slane is the first castle I have ever visited in Ireland physically.

The castle was built in the late 18th century, and it has been the seat of the Conyngham family since its establishment. Although one might say: "but that is not so long ago… in comparison to many other castles dating back to medieval times. Surprisingly, the castle was built on the site of an earlier castle, dating back to the 16th century. The present castle was constructed using the stones from the old one! So, there you have another piece of history! The Conynghams were prominent figures in Irish society, known for their involvement in politics, agriculture, and the arts. During the early 20th century, the castle underwent various renovations and modernizations, and throughout the World War II, the castle was even used to house refugees fleeing the conflicts in Europe.

For those of you not so keen on reading boring historical facts, I daresay you might find the latest aspect of the castle appealing. In more recent years, Slane Castle has become notorious for its association with music events. Since 1981, it has been the site of the Slane Concert! Why, it was Slane Castle where numerous of the world's most famous bands have performed, including U2, The Rolling Stones, and Queen! The area has become iconic in the realm of outdoor concerts and shows in Ireland and is widely known in many parts of the world!

Now, some questions might have risen… what about the founders, the lineage who has allegedly been residing there for the past two generations? Well, Slane Castle remains privately owned by the Conyngham family to this day, but parts of it are open to the public for guided tours, and concerts are held in the outer surroundings, as I already mentioned. A bit of a profit, eh?

I have been there myself to attend a concert of my favorite band, and I can only affirm it is an extraordinarily charming place with its mesmerizing countryside and a magnificent atmosphere that truly enraptures you.

So, in case you'd be planning a trip to Ireland, do not make any further ado and add Slane Castle to your itinerary!

Take care and Slán go fóill!
