Trump Revives Greenland Purchase Plan

10.01.2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again announced the idea of purchasing Greenland, stirring diplomatic tensions between the United States and Denmark. The proposal, which echoes Trump's controversial 2019 attempt, highlights Greenland's strategic significance and resource potential.

The U.S. has long been interested in Greenland. In 1867, it considered buying the island, and in 1946, it offered Denmark $100 million, citing its importance for Arctic security. Today, Greenland's position in the Arctic, combined with its rare earth mineral deposits, makes it increasingly attractive to U.S. policymakers.

Denmark and Greenland, however, strongly oppose the idea. For Denmark, selling Greenland is inconceivable, as it remains a key component of the Danish realm. Greenlanders, who enjoy significant autonomy, are concerned about their cultural identity and potential exploitation under U.S. ownership.

From the American perspective, owning Greenland would enhance military capabilities, particularly given increasing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. Critics, however, view Trump's plan as dismissive of Greenland's sovereignty and reflective of a transactional foreign policy.

It seems unlikely, that Greenland would want to get acquired by the U.S., however, Trump had already sent his older son and few other of his close associates there for discussions and we will have to sit back and watch how will this controversial move undergo.
