Aran Islands

12.04.2024

Situated approximately 48km away from Galway Bay are the Aran Islands, comprising three little islands – Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr. They are the last lands to the west before you reach America, enclosed by Atlantic Ocean (in case some of you did not grasp that :D).

The islands themselves are sovereignly known for their wild landscapes, distinctive knitted jumpers, and pretty cottages. Perhaps the most dominant feature of the islands' scenery are stone walls which are typical for the west of Ireland.

Despite their remote location, visitors frequently add the islands to their travel itinerary, and often prebook a ferry ride or a flight. Many people seek the islands for their serene environment and often come on a retreat to connect with authentic and rural Ireland. They have inspired countless writers, poets, composers, and artists worldwide.

All three islands are Irish-speaking communities, but residents are bilingual, and English is their second language. It is probably the most well-preserved area in Ireland in terms of culture and traditions.

Like plenty of other places in Ireland, the Aran Islands are steeped in legend. Let me present one of the myths to you briefly. The Cliffs on the Inishmore, particularly the Dun Aonghasa fort is associated with various stories, one of the most prominent is their connection to the ancient Celtic god o the sea, Manannán mac Lir. Manannán mac Lir is a figure in Irish mythology, depicted as a powerful deity associated with the sea, storms, and the Otherworld. The cliffs are believed to have been one of his domains or sacred places. Moreover, it is said that Dun Aonghasa held a strategic position overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and its cliffs served as a natural defense against invaders. Legends suggest that Manannán may have imbued the fort with protective powers to ensure the safety of inhabitants. Aside from the mentioned, there might be other legends associated with the islands. It is a fascinating and enrapturing topic, albeit open to debate and interpretation.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the Aran Islands and I wish you the best!

Take care of yourselves! Bye! <3
