I think embroidery is pretty underappreciated art. It's not difficult to learn, not that hard to do, it's inexpensive, useful and pretty relaxing. It's definitely a nice hobby to hop into.

So what you're going to need? Scissors, some fabric (it shouldn't be too tight or too loosely woven), embroidery floss and some needles with eyes big enough for floss come through. Embroidery hoop isn't necessary but it keeps fabric taut and that really makes things easier. If you don't have and don't want to buy one, I think you'll manage just fine. Personally I've never worked with one and I still did pretty well.

For newbies I think cross-stitch is the best choice to start with. It's very easy and it's usually not combined with other types of stitches. And it looks like pixel-art. For this one the best fabrics are Aida (which was specifically invented for it) or linen.

Now here are some other basic stitches you really need to know: backstitch, running stitch, stem stitch, chain stitch, satin stitch, split stitch, blanket stitch and french knot. They're all very easy to learn and prove themselves to be very useful.
