playing IRL

24.12.2017

Hey. My name is Michael. I am a normal 16 years old high schooler. My best friend's name is Jason. My life is absolutely boring, except for one thing. It's a game called IRL - meaning "In real life".

What is it about? It is exactly what its name suggests - a game you play in real life. Long story short, you register on the website - either as a solo player or in a team. You write which town you live in (it has to be a town that is a part of the game). The goal is to find 100 keys. And the winner wins 1000 dollars.

How do you find these keys? Well, you receive a clue on your email and set outside to find the place that is hinted. There, you find another hint where to go next. After some time, you reach the key.

But it's not so easy. There are a lot of players and if someone gets to the key you're searching for before you, you have to ask for a different clue to a different key. There exist over a 1000 hidden keys and each year, they get replaced and switched to different places. Meaning every year one person or one team can win. Of course, sometimes nobody manages to find a total of 100 keys.

Oh, and once you find a key, you have to report it to the website and the clue for that key is erased.

Jason first came to me with it 2 years ago. He always finds the craziest stuff. At first, I didn't want to play. But he kept on pestering me, so I agreed to create a team with him. ,,Only one clue." I said. And got completely hooked.

The first year, we found only 48 keys. You have to understand it was our first time playing and we began in July instead of January. So obviously, it couldn't be good.

Last year though, we had 99 keys. Ninety - nine freaking keys! And right on December 31st , at 11:30 p.m., we reached the place where our last key should have been - only to see a group of five players walking away with it. That year, they won.

So this year, me and Jason are definitely winning the game. Just in case you're wondering, it is March 10th right now. We already have 22 keys. Oh and this thing I'm writing is a sort of a journal. To document some of the stuff that happens to us sometimes.

For now, I think I'll just write about our first time playing.

to be continued...
