I have always wondered what people see in coffee, why numerous people can't start their day without a fresh cup of coffee. The concept of having extra energy seems pretty beneficial to me, but as you can already tell, I'm not the biggest fan of drinking coffee, more specifically the bitter taste of it. I'm the typical tea person, so I've started to research which brand of coffee is the most popular and appealing.

To my surprise, the answer to my research is the well-known brand Starbucks. I did know that Starbucks has the most selling on the market, but I was always hearing from my close ones that their coffee is just cheaper in flavor. I, as a tea drinker, have without fail found the coffee cups adorable! Even some of their drinks are pretty colorful, so that may be a great marketing move to catch customers' eye. And it is obviously the easiest and fastest way to get coffee as quickly as possible these days.

The first Starbucks was opened in Seattle, opened by three partners who met while the diversity of San Francisco, on March 30, 1971, English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them his style of roasting beans. As of September 2020, the company had 32,660 stores in 83 countries. The Starbucks chain also offers tea, snacks, cakes, etc. I would maybe even say, really fancy fast food.

I always thought that Starbucks is just a fast-money company, without thinking about small businesses and people. So the fact, that they are doing Fairtrade was really shocking (in the best way) for me. In 2000, the company introduced a line of fair trade products. Of the approximately 136,000 tons of coffee Starbucks purchased in 2006, about 8.2 million kilograms or 6% was certified as fair trade. All espresso roast sold in the UK and Ireland is Fairtrade. Groups such as Global Exchange called for Starbucks to further increase its sales of fair trade coffees!
