Why we Procrastinate?

05.05.2025

and how to stop it... hopefully...

Okay so, if you're reading this instead of doing homework, same. Welcome to the club.

Let's talk about procrastination. You know, that thing where you plan to start your science project at 4:00, but suddenly it's 9:37 PM and you're watching cat videos and wondering why your life is like this. Yeah. That thing.

So, why do we procrastinate?

Well, according to actual psychology (I looked this up, I promise), procrastination isn't just laziness. It's more like a fight between two parts of your brain. The "logical" part (prefrontal cortex) is trying to get stuff done, but the "feel-good now" part (limbic system) is like, let's chill and worry later. Guess which one wins when you're tired or stressed? Yup. The chill one.

There's also something called "task aversion." It basically means if something feels boring, stressful, or confusing, your brain avoids it. Like when you keep telling yourself, "I'll write that essay after I clean my room," and suddenly you're deep-cleaning your closet like you're on a home makeover show.

Another reason is perfectionism. Some people (me) don't even want to start an assignment if we feel like it won't turn out perfect. Which is kind of dumb if you think about it because doing something is better than doing nothing. But brains are weird like that.

So… how do we stop?

I wish I could say "just do it" like Nike and that would magically fix everything, but nah. Some things that actually help though:

  1. The 5-Minute Rule: Tell yourself you'll do the task for just five minutes. Usually, once you start, it's not as bad as you thought. I did this with math once and ended up doing like 45 minutes (??).
  2. Break stuff down: "Write history paper" is scary. But "write intro paragraph" or even "open Google Docs" is manageable. Baby steps, people.
  3. Remove distractions: I know this sounds obvious but putting your phone in another room or using a website blocker actually works. TikTok will survive without you for an hour.
  4. Reward yourself: Like, "If I finish this worksheet, I get a snack." Sounds childish, but hey, it works.
  5. Forgive yourself: Seriously. Everyone procrastinates sometimes. Don't waste time feeling guilty. Just try again tomorrow.

In conclusion (because every article needs a conclusion), procrastination is super common and doesn't mean you're lazy or broken. It just means you're human. The important thing is to notice when it's happening and try to do something small to fight back. You got this. Probably.

Now go do your homework. Or not. But like... eventually.
